It is one thing to give something away, quite another to give something up, and something else entirely, as Bonhoeffer points out, to surrender your ability to decide what you will give away and give up, where you will go and what you will do, what you will say and who you will be. Discipleship is “Thy will be done.”
These are perhaps the hardest words in life to say, let alone live. But how beautiful is the will that emanates from the heart of a loving Father and His Son? The will to forgive, to rescue, to adopt, to fellowship… to crush Himself and suffer for our good.
